Two men were arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences in Manchester city centre as part of an ongoing counter-terrorism investigation.
Police arrested the men on Newton Street at around 2.45pm on Sunday 20 September 2026. Counter Terrorism Policing London is leading the operation, working closely with Counter Terrorism Policing North West and Greater Manchester Police.
Police cordon reported in Northern Quarter
A large police presence was reported in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, with a cordon in place on Sunday evening.
Witnesses told the Manchester Evening News they saw six unmarked police cars and plain-clothed officers wearing snoods during the arrests. They also reported seeing two men handcuffed on the ground.
Men remain in police custody
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said the men were arrested under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 and remained in police custody.
The spokesperson said there was no evidence at that time to suggest any wider threat to the public. Counter Terrorism Policing said it was continuing to work with policing partners across the country to help keep the public safe.
The Metropolitan Police said it could not provide further details because the investigation was ongoing.
