Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has announced new guidance to prepare the public for a broad range of threats that could affect the UK, Metro News reported.
The “Be Ready” campaign will advise people in Britain to keep non-perishable food and bottled water at home. It will also encourage households to sign up to the Priority Services Register, which helps utility companies identify households that may need additional support during emergencies.
Preparedness for disruption
The campaign uses a three-day-disruption preparedness concept borrowed from similar approaches in France, Ireland and the Netherlands.
Streeting echoed recent warnings from Army chief Sir Roly Walker and MI5 director general Sir Ken McCallum that preparedness should receive greater attention. He said the UK must strengthen and take seriously its national resilience alongside its national defence.
He also asked households and businesses whether they were prepared and ready, and whether they knew how they would respond to everyday challenges.
Cyber attacks among possible threats
Streeting suggested that hostile-state incidents could include increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks.
In his annual threat-update speech last week, Sir Ken McCallum said members of the British public have a stake in national resilience and a vital role to play.
